4 Steps to Conquering Your Fear

Have you ever been so afraid to step forward into change, thinking that it will be good, but you’re not actually able to take that first step? Doubts creep in because you don’t know how it will really go. Or maybe it’s something that you know you need to address, like a relationship or bad habit, but you just can’t get yourself to do it? I am going to be honest with you. Starting Living Well Women’s Coaching back in January 2016 I was petrified! I couldn’t believe I was even considering opening a coaching business, and at the same time I couldn’t stop either. It wasn’t easy. There were the dreaded “what if” thoughts…

  • What if it fails?

  • What if people – or worse yet – my friends and family judge me?

  • What if I can’t find clients?

  • What if I’m not good enough?

That was just the tip of the iceberg! Taking that first step was incredibly scary, but I did it! And then the next, and the next. Fear was always present and a part of the journey, and frankly still can be.

Fear can stop us right in our tracks; the thing is we just can’t stay there. Well, I guess that is an option, but not an option I wanted. Obviously I pushed my way through, but not without a lot of work. If this is you, know you are not alone.

As I reflect on my journey, 4 things really stood out that helped me conquer my fear and move forward.

4 things that helped conquer my fear:

  1. Will I regret it if I don’t try? I asked myself what will I be glad I did at the end of my life? Will I be thankful I pushed through my fear, and actually did what I was passionate about, or will I be glad I stayed in my comfort zone and played it safe? Mark Twain’s quote says it well “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” Jesus came so that we can have an abundant life! John 10:10

  2. I started speaking as if it was already true. Wow, did that feel uncomfortable! It also felt AMAZING! The more I said I was a coach at Living Well Women’s Coaching, the more real it felt! And the more excited I got! It is a mind-over-matter thing! You have the power to do all things through Christ who gives you strength! Philippians 4:13

  3. Take things one small step at a time. I would catch myself looking too far ahead, and I worried about how it would ever play out. I got overwhelmed. It seemed impossible. I discovered, when I took my eyes off the mountain in front of me, and only looked at what I needed to do that day (or in the very near future), it seemed more feasible. God has a plan for you – there’s no need for worry! Matthew 6:34

  4. Keeping my eyes fixed on Him. As I started speaking more about the dream on my heart, the more I received input from others. Most were extremely excited for me (if not all!), and I also heard more advice, criticism, skepticism, and actually judgement, which really clouded my vision. It led to more doubts and confusion. Once I pulled back and refocused my eyes on God and His plan for me, the vision cleared up. I realized I like to please others but ultimately, I’m here to please God. Colossians 3:2

My dream starting to take shape in my new office! How about you? What fear is standing in your way? Do you have a dream on your heart, yet fearful because you don’t know how it will turn out? Maybe God is asking you to change something in your life and you are fearful – an unhappy marriage, bad habits, maybe even embracing and liking who you are, and it looks impossible to conquer. Please know that is so normal! Change, especially when it involves risk and uncertainty, is very hard, and produces fear.

Whatever your fear might be, we are more than conquerors! Romans 8:31-32 says if God is for us, nothing can stand against us! Wow, the Creator of the universe is on your side! You can’t get any more confident than that!

I don’t want to live with regrets. Do you? The choice is yours.
